Plastic Material Selection for OEM Products: Shrinkage, Finish and Compliance

Material choice is a manufacturing decision, not a purchasing one

When a plastic part fails in the field, the cause is often traced back to a material specified at the quotation stage to hit a target price. Material selection determines shrinkage, cycle time, surface finish, chemical resistance and the range of colours that can be achieved reliably — and every one of those factors shows up later, either as a small line in a molding report or as a customer complaint.

At Huizhou Xiantianbao Technology Industrial Co., Ltd., material selection sits inside the engineering review rather than alongside it. With 19 injection molding machines and in-house product development, the question asked at the start of a project is not "what is the cheapest grade that passes?" but "what grade will still meet the requirement in the third year of production?"

Shrinkage: the parameter that decides whether a mold is usable

Every thermoplastic shrinks as it cools, and different materials shrink by different amounts — and by different amounts in different directions. A mold cut for one material's shrinkage rate will not produce dimensionally correct parts if the material is later substituted, even with a nominally similar grade.

Material familyTypical use in OEM goodsWhat it means for the tool
ABSHousings, consumer product shellsGood finish, moderate shrinkage, easy to process
PPContainers, living hinges, functional partsHigher shrinkage; living hinges require specific grade selection
PCTransparent covers, structural partsHigh melt temperature, needs effective drying
PC/ABS blendApplications needing toughness plus finishBalances impact resistance with cosmetic quality
TPE / TPUGrips, overmolded soft-touch surfacesRequires overmolding design and compatible substrate

The practical consequence: a material substitution after the mold is cut is not a purchasing adjustment. It is an engineering change that may require recutting. Buyers should treat the approved material grade as part of the tooling specification, not as a line item that can be renegotiated independently.

Surface finish and colour: where appearance requirements get settled

Cosmetic standards are frequently described in words — "matte", "premium feel", "like the sample" — and words are not testable. The finish is determined by the mold steel surface and the material together, so the finish decision has to be made before the mold is textured.

  • Texture specification. Standard texture grades allow the finish to be specified numerically rather than by adjective, and let supplier and buyer compare against the same reference.
  • Colour matching method. Masterbatch versus pre-compounded colour affects consistency and minimum order quantity. Masterbatch is more flexible for small runs; pre-compounded material gives better batch-to-batch consistency for large ones.
  • Gloss level. High-gloss surfaces show flow marks and minor sink far more readily than matte surfaces. If the design requires gloss, gate and cooling layout need to be reviewed with that in mind.
  • Overmolding compatibility. For soft-touch grips, the substrate and the TPE grade must be chemically compatible, and the bonding must be tested rather than assumed.

Compliance documents belong in the specification package

For goods sold into European, North American and other regulated markets, material compliance is not a document produced at the end of a project. It is a constraint on which grades can be used at all. Xiantianbao holds High-Tech Enterprise status (since 2019) and works to documented quality-control procedures across every production stage, and participates in Trust Seal and Credit Check verification as part of supplier assessment.

Buyers should confirm before tooling begins:

  • Which regulatory frameworks apply to the destination market, and which material grades satisfy them.
  • Whether recycled content is required, and at what percentage, with verifiable documentation.
  • Whether food-contact, RoHS or other specific compliance evidence is needed, and in what form.
  • How compliance is maintained if a material grade is discontinued — the substitution procedure should be agreed in advance.

Building the specification package

A material specification that holds up in production contains four things: the approved grade with manufacturer reference, the shrinkage the mold was cut for, the surface finish standard, and the compliance evidence required for the destination market. When those four are fixed before tooling, most late-stage material disputes disappear.

Xiantianbao supports OEM and ODM projects from product concept development through mold design, injection molding, assembly and finished-product packaging, with bulk and customized small packaging available and FOB, CIF, DDU and DDP terms supported.
